Helpful Tips to Ensure a Simple and Easy Home Remodel

Helpful Tips to Ensure a Simple and Easy Home RemodelTaking on a home remodel is a big step. So the last thing you need is for it to be complicated and overwhelming. So much of the stress can be avoided with simple planning and a wise strategy. At Unique Home Building, we’ve been in the remodeling business for years and we’ve learned what works and doesn’t work.
So today, we are happy to share with you our simple tips to ensure a simple and easy home remodel process!
Have a reasonable vision. We all want to have everything on our list of dreams come true, but you have to be realistic and consider your timeline and budget. What is really possible? What is the most important and will make the most difference now? Can you handle how long that will take and what it will cost?
Start with an easy and workable to-do list. Many people fall head over heels for the latest apps and gadgets. But I have found that so many people do much better with a simple sticky note or day planner list. It doesn't mean you're lazy or unintelligent.  All these different tools can leave you spending much more time trying to organize or consolidate your list, leaving many of your items undone.
Helpful Tips to Ensure a Simple and Easy Home Remodel

Keep it sectioned into 3’s.  I remember seeing a Tony Robbins talk about being overwhelmed with too many things to do.   But many times though our list has 10 things on it, it's likely they can be grouped into 3 (or 4) groups.  Home, family & work.  That's the first step. Once your list is organized into categories, you may find that you can narrow it down even further to your top 3 priorities and then another list of 3 secondary things to do.   At the end of the day - you'll likely get 6 things done!  But at the very least, you'll get the most important things done first - leaving you feel accomplished and at peace with your performance.

Have an idea book! This is the number one idea we have.  Paper, phone, moleskin, iPad...  whatever. little things you remember, ideas & responsibilities should all go to one place. You know how it is - an idea will come to you and you love it! .... but then you forget it. With an idea book,  you can reference this list at the end of the day an organize them accordingly.

Keep your ideas organized.  Your life is busy and organization is what keeps it more simple. That capture pad is able to keep you from forgetting the important tasks and ideas that pop into your head.  At the end of the day place tasks on to your categorized to-do list and ideas either into your work planner or artistic/idea outlet space.  ...which brings me to another point-

Study Color and Trends.  Color holds a lot of influence in the making of your home. Be inspired by trends, but don’t just go with them. Bright reds can cause stress or creativity, depending on where they are placed and how they are combined. In most cases, blues are calming and nurturing, but add too much grey in them, and they will feel cold and empty. Start to notice how colors make you feel, which ones make you happy, motivated, sad, tired or relaxed. Write that down. See the patterns.

Hire a Trustworthy and Skilled Contractor.  Nothing will be a bigger headache than knowing what you want and putting your home’s remodel into unqualified or untrustworthy hands. Research the contractor you’re looking to work with. Read their reviews. Notice who’s referred to more than once.

Of course, if you’re in the Dallas area, and you’re ready to make some changes in your home, great contractors are just a phone call away. Call the contractors at Unique Home Building today and see what steps would be needed for your home project!

How to Design Your Bedroom for Better Sleep

How to Design Your Bedroom for Better SleepPoor sleep can lead to more than just dark circles under your eyes. Research has proven that lack of restful sleep can lead to a weakened immune system, weight gain, muscle tightness, brain fog, mood disorders and impaired decision making.  While you can't build more hours into your day, you can tinker with your bedroom environment to improve your chances of getting a restful night's sleep. Here are a number of ways to do that.
White Noise
You could easily invest in a white noise machines, small fans and even modern apps for proper white noise. White noise helps to drown out both the silence and chaos surrounding you that often distracts you from your ability to fall into deep sleep. This will help your sleep to be more comfortable in mind and body.
Relaxing Colors
A bright tuscan inspired yellow may be the perfect shade to brighten a dark room, but it's not ideal for a restful night’s sleep. A better choice would be one that considers going with a more relaxing and calming shade in a cool-color family like light blue, sage green, or rich purple. Color your room for beauty sleep.
Don’t Be Alarmed.
Waking up rested isn't only about the number of hours your head rests on a pillow.  It also has a lot to do with how the slumber ends! It's not normal to feel refreshed with an obnoxious alarm clock.  You may want to invest in an alarm clock that eases the transition from sleep to wake, rather than startling you. This will definitely help you start the day feeling fresh.
Lower the Lights.
Remember how cozy it was for you when your mom turned out the light after tucking you in? There's something so relaxing and ritualistic about the routine that really invites real relaxation. Re-create that comforting atmosphere with a dimmer switch that works via remote control. Some even allow you to choose different shades of light!  If you need help, we at Unique Home Building are happy to help install them.
Keep out the Sun.
The beautiful morning sun light is an incredible thing to wake up but when it shows up too early, it can deprive you of crucial REM sleep. One of the easiest ways to find something suitable for keeping you asleep is with the darkness that black out shades provide.  Once you're awake and moving, though, make sure you open the shades wide, because morning light also helps strengthen your body rhythms and get your brain going!
Cleaner Air.
Dust, pollen, and pet dander trigger allergic reactions that cause sinus and asthma problems and can seriously disrupt a good night's sleep. There are many air purifiers out there - so do your homework and see how cleaner air can help your sleep improve!
Those are some very easy to apply improvements to your home, health and lifestyle. However, if you'd like suggestions for jumping into a bigger home renovation project, we at Unique Home, would love to help! Here's to restful living!

Get the LOOK of a Remodeled Living Room with These Easy Tips!

Get the LOOK of a Remodeled Living Room with These Easy Tips!
Everyone knows what it’s like to want to change things up in the home, but not everyone is ready for an all out home remodel. That’s ok. When you do want to go that route, Unique Home Building is ready to help. But in the meantime, it might be as simple as some simple addition and subtraction in the living room.

Give your home a visual remodel with these simple ideas!
Start by getting rid of things: So many things clutter our homes and take away the beautiful simplicity that we long for. So why not look at the room and see what you could do without. Smaller couch? One less chair? What about less things on the shelves? Try to stick to just a couple of picture frames. If there are papers taking up space, get a small box to keep them in so it’s still feels peaceful.
Invest in a few fun accent pillows: Couches and chairs are big, expensive items. They are also a big reason why living rooms can appear dated pretty quickly. However, something as simple as changing up your accent pillows can make a big difference, from the color scheme to the overall look of your couch and chairs. For example, you can move from orange/reds to blue/grays, from floral to mod. And I'll bet at least one person will say "Did you get a new couch?"
Upgrade the lighting: For most of us, the living room is the place we go to relax, which = no harsh lighting. Daytime lighting should be as natural as possible, so look for ways to increase natural light by removing obstacles that may be blocking light (heavy window treatments, furniture in front of windows). In the evenings, the lighting should be soft and warm. Stark lighting = doctor's waiting room vibe. Soft lighting = cozy in your pj's vibe, drinking some wine vibe. Lighting can be improved by changing the placement of your lamps, using bulbs with lower wattage, or by installing a dimmer switch.
Add plants: In the form of indoor plants, herb pots, terrariums, or flowering pots. Greenery will instantly freshen up your space and is nice for the health of your space as well.
Add an accent color: Maybe you're happy with the basic color choice of your living room walls but it's starting to feel tired. Consider adding one accent wall. This is a great chance to use a bold color choice or wallpaper pattern that you may not want for an entire room but that would look great in a small dose. For a few dollars and a few hours of work, you can completely change the look of your living room.
If you’re looking for some change - start with the little things. Then plan for the big things. At least in the meantime you’ll have a beautiful space to relax in!

One Up the Rest With These Priceless Mother’s Day Gift Ideas.

One Up the Rest With These Priceless Mother’s Day Gift Ideas.
Why not be the one to give her the best gift this year for Mother’s Day? Hasn’t she earned it? For all the long days and nights she’s spent picking up everyone else’s laundry, doing their dishes, entertaining and making feasts… I’d say it’s time to give back and let her throw in the towel.
Besides. Flowers get old and die. Gifts that keep on giving are the ones we want to invest in.
Here are some themed ideas that will say ‘thank you’, ‘I love you’ and so much more, as you celebrate the moms in your life.
Help through cleanliness.
Moms clean homes.  Even the ones that don't mind the mess like it clean.  No matter how much the rest of the family helps out, mom is the ultimate judge of 'clean' and that's fine.
How can you give her the gift of more clean?
  • add a laundry room with built-ins that feels fresh and breezy
  • add kitchen organization and better cabinets
  • add closet organization to bigger closets
  • clean out garage and organize the storage to be easily found and added to
Go with the gift of art and inspiration.
Mom's, like everyone, need an expressive and inspirational outlet.  This is an easy one to do and she'll be so happy you did it!
  • convert a room/garage into a crafting room for art, music, scrap booking, photography...
  • add a window seat or reading nook for the avid reader.  (really make it great and add a special space just for her coffee or tea)
Relaxation is more than a gift. It’s a life saver.
She's a hard worker and deserves a place to relax.  From overworked mind and body to being the family nurse and chauffeur, this talented woman needs a place to put her feet up!
  • Build her a sauna.  This will be good for her nerves, her skin and overall health. BIG WIN.
  • Add a deck to the backyard to house a hot tub with an arbor above for vines to wrap themselves around.
  • Do both of those things.  Can you imagine going to the sauna and then the hot tub?  That would be one happy woman.
Vitality and Good Health.
Once you've given her the chance to relax, give her the chance to feel alive and ready for anything! She needs to feel exhilarated and strong; because that's her natural, deeper state!
  • Add a body space, like an exercise room or yoga studio
  • Make a space for raised gardening beds in the back or front yard
  • Ride a bike - You could do a lot with this one.  One bigger idea is to place a stationary bike stand for your conventional bike, into the exercise room, with a fan and a flat screen set up. This is a bit complex, but great for those really hot days where it's just too hot outside to do what she's love to do.
Can you see it already, handing her a ribbon wrapped box, and the expression of joy on her face when the note inside is her ticket to improved living right in her own home? That, would be priceless and we can't wait to help you with it. Please reach out to us and our contractors at Unique Home Builders, for all your home renovation needs. And tell your mom “Happy Mother’s Day” from us!
