How to Care for Your Beautiful New Tile Floor.. Without the Fuss.

How to Care for Your Beautiful New Tile Floor.. Without the Fuss.
There are so many different types of floors to choose when you’re remodeling your home. The most common choices are tile and hardwoods. We just recently addressed hardwoods, so today we will focus on the tile. Tile is easy to clean and and makes for elegant kitchen and bathroom floor options.

If you’ve chosen to instal tile, you’ll want to be sure you care for them well to prolong their beauty and and value. Here’s how:

Clean promptly. We all know that messes happen, but instead of banning everyone but yourself from walking on your floor, it's important to make sure dirt and spills do not have a chance to make themselves at home.  Surprisingly, this is easy enough to do with a mop or cloth, hot water, and a mild household detergent. Just spot test it first to make sure it treats your tile well.

Love your grout . Grout is the substance that holds the ceramic tiles in place. Unfortunately, over time, and with exposure to the elements, this (often white) grout can become discolored and dingy. When this happens, it really detracts from the beauty of your floor. So to preserve the tile and grout, you really want to make sure that the grout is properly sealed after installation; and even update the seal once a year to maintain it's use and beauty. This will keep stains, dirt, and water from being able to penetrate the protective barrier.
Maintenance is prevention. The next key, is regular maintenance. The best and most effective step you can take is to regularly sweep, vacuum, and damp mop your tile floors. Even a quick sweeping or vacuum job will remove the dirt and debris before it can become embedded in the tile or grout. Mopping with warm water and using a cleaning product safe for your tile will also enhance your tile’s gloss, shine, and color.
A natural solution: Another simple and tile safe option you can utilize, is to mix a cup of white vinegar with a gallon of water for a wonderfully effective, odor-eliminating cleanser. This is a great natural alternative for those who are wanting to avoid harsh chemicals
Tile is one of the best flooring options you can choose and they are quite simple to care for with the right knowledge and tools. The contractors at Unique Home Building are skilled and prepared to work with you on each of these details, whatever the project size. Contact us today and get your plan started!

Simple Tips to Keep Your Wood Floors Looking Beautiful and New For Years After You’ve Gotten Them.

Simple Tips to Keep Your Wood Floors Looking Beautiful and New For Years After You’ve Gotten Them. Hardwood floors are great and the perfect accent to any home. They are easy to clean and bring luxury wherever they go. So what’s better than having your floors and keeping them beautiful?  We at Unique Home Building want to leave you with our best tips to caring for your hardwood floors.
First, take care. Remove shoes when indoors. It’s becoming quite common, so don’t worry about inconveniencing your guests. They’ll be just fine. Sweep or vacuum regularly. Wipe up spills immediately. Stick to gentle cleaners.
Care for the details.

Once a week, make sure to use a dust mop for loose dirt, hair, animal shedding, dust and other debris. It’s pretty easy to find cloths that are electrostatic, disposable or even wood cleaning sprays.  You can also simply sweep or vacuum it up. Just be sure you do the more detailed method on a weekly basis.

Monthly, commit to cleaning the whole area with a product meant just for for hardwoods. Be sure to follow the directions and not to leave too much or standing water on the floor, because you will damage the floors permanently. Use a sponge or mop and rinse as needed.

Remove scuffs and marks as you notice them.

Scuffs happen. They usually happen from dragging items, furniture and shoes. So first of all, keep those shoes off indoors. Second, place felt pads on the underside of all furniture. Lastly, if you do get scuffs, they’re relatively easy to get out. Here’s how:

- Pencil Eraser. This is the easiest and is best for small scuffs.
- Scuff Eraser. Meant for bigger jobs, and can be found at most hardware stores.
- Acetone. For more stubborn scuffs, but be careful. Acetone is strong and can dry out the surface of the wood. So make sure to follow up with an oil-based solvent to restore shine and condition.
- Lastly, a more natural option is a paste made from baking soda and vinegar. Let the paste sit for about an hour and then scrub off with a dish pad or paper towel.

Screened In Porches Will Change Your Summer For the Better. Here’s Why:

Screened In Porches Will Change Your Summer For the Better. Here’s Why:
Once people find out the benefit of screened in porches, they quickly move the project to the tops of their lists. Why? Well, there are many reasons.
You add more space to your home.
Have a big crowd coming over? No problem. You now have the space to send the kids to play while the adults have their own and everyone gets fresh air and comfort. Or, feel free to have a dinner party without the pests or risk of rain.

You have the option of enjoying ALL the seasons without the extreme climate change.
With screened panels, your porch will only stay as comfortable as the temperatures outdoors. You can increase the time you’re able to use your porch if you construct additional panels for use in place of the screens during cooler weather. With plexiglass panels, suddenly your summer porch becomes a three-season porch that stays comfortable during the cooler spring and autumn months.

You’ll add style and value to your home.
Depending on the style of your home, you’ve likely got plenty of options for designing and building your screened-in porch. Generally, the way it works, is that screened porches are built with wood framing that supports the screen panels. You have the option of keeping it simple or making it more formal, stained and finished. It's great for the resale value as well.

Fresh air all year round.
With the screens and new windows, you’ll be able to let in that fresh clean air and let out the germs, no matter what the temperature or season. This is key in keeping air circulating and in protecting your immune system. Stagnant air is fresh air. Keep things moving.

Unique Home Building knows what makes a good home. A screened porch that's attached to your home can be turn into the perfect spot for you and your family to enjoy on lazy summer days or in the crisp fall mornings. With a roof over the porch, you won’t have any worries about overexposure to the sun, wind or other elements. At the same time, being surrounded by screens, allows fresh air into the porch and home without letting in all the bugs.

Want Some Simple Ideas for an Easy Kid’s Room Upgrade? We Thought So.

Want Some Simple Ideas for an Easy Kid’s Room Upgrade? We Thought So.
When our kids have a beautiful room to escape to, they sleep better, feel more inspired and are able to be at peace. But it’s not an easy undertaking for everyone and the details could be discouraging.

This doesn’t mean you should throw the baby out with the bathwater by any means! Instead, take a look at these helpful tips that will take the stress out of the planning and leave your child (and you) with a beautiful room to enjoy!

Think about how you child would like to feel in his or her room.
How a room looks determines how it feels to just about anyone. Sit down and ask your child what changes he or she would like to see.  Consider their hobbies and passions, as they can influence furniture, accent and them design. Color matters as well. Talk to your child about the colors he would like to see in his room. If it's important for him to have lime green walls, remember it's only paint and can be covered inexpensively and quickly at any time. Have fun with it!
Keep the light.
One of the biggest mistakes parents make, usually due to space issues, is cover up the windows. Even covering part of the windows will cause the room to look smaller and darker. Make sure that taller furniture is at least 6 inches from the sides of any window to make sure the sunlight can get in.
Bonus lights.
Sunlight isn’t always the right light. If your child has a desk, you might consider a mobile hanging ceiling light or a wall light. We feel it’s important to have alternative lamp options but recommend that they not be kept on desks or floors, as they can add clutter or be dangerous.
Make sure it’s useful.
A child's age, interests and available floor space all come into play when you're trying to figure out how the room will best function for them. Think about how many kids are in the room, what kind of beds you're wanting to have, the need for desks, a cozy place to read or retreat and even storage. Some small things you could do would be to add a small table and chairs create a convenient place to draw, play games or just pretend. An artist's easel can encourage your little artist to create his masterpiece. A small sofa, bean bag chairs and funky ottomans can accommodate older kids and their friends.
Keep plenty of storage.
One of the hardest aspects of a kid room remodel is making sure there's enough storage space included in the process.  So in this one, consider all possibilities to make sure you don't run out of space. You can't have too much storage. Closet organizers, the most obvious option, get the most use of closet areas, while helping to keep clothing, shoes and other items neat and orderly. Wall shelves or shelving organizing systems can be loaded with baskets so your child can keep all their random toys, but looking orderly and clean at the same time.
Those are just the beginning of the ideas.  But they are a great door into more possibility. Once you’re more clear on what you want, talk to a contractor and make sure everything can be done according to your need. Failing to do this can cause you to go off course in your budget and leave with a room not quite to your liking and a lot of remodeler's remorse!
